“Supporting our local environment, parks, beaches, railway station, open spaces, and Nature; reaching out to children and young people to join our cause …. “
The Pandemic meant that regular beach cleaning sessions had to be cancelled, then socially distanced and always COVID safe. We kept to the rules and by February 2022, we were able to get back to how it used to be
Last year .... On the beach
Our "last Sunday in the month" litter picks on Lancing beach brings about a real sense of purpose and achievement to those who regularly join us. Many kilos of litter have been removed and, wherever possible, items collected have been recycled. We also began very successful Tuesday morning in School Holiday litter picks that includes a Treasure Hunt. Throughout, we have been visited by playgroups, Sea Scouts, Beavers and Brownies, local businesses and organisations who litter pick with us. Ferring Country Park litter pickers join us weekly and it has been tremendous to have their help. Students undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Awards at Sir Robert Woodard Academy come along for ten one hourly volunteering sessions as part of their programme and training. And we have just begun what we plan to be regular litter picks with students at Northbrook College in Worthing. Everyone gains a sense of community and achievement from our combined efforts. And, literally whilst going to press, we are hosting our first litter pick with Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club – members of their U12 team
Last year …. Lancing Refill
Lancing Refill has become a very important part of Keep Lancing Lovely. The concept is simple and clever. Rather than buying single use plastic bottled water, have a container and go into local cafes, pubs and other outlets to have it filled with fresh water for free. Lancing Refill has twenty plus such outlets, all recruited by Keep Lancing Lovely stalwart and Refill Local Champion, Wendy Peters; more about that at https://www.refill.org.uk/refill-lancing/
Last year .... At the station
Over the past five years, the Keep Lancing Lovely Station Partnership with Southern Trains has blossomed in many ways. This year exceptionally so with glorious flowers and shrubs in beds against the level crossing and behind platform 1. We get many positive comments about our work at the station
Last year .... Working with others
In October, £1,000 funding from Lancing Parish Council has been received to continue our work in the village, as well as funding from the Co-op 2022/3 Community Funding initiative. We will be using the funding to provide as many Year 6 children as we can at our local schools with a tote bag, Refill container, seeds and information about Keep Lancing Lovely. We continue to receive and are very grateful for regular grants from Sue and John at Recycling In Lancing
Sue and John at Recycling in Lancing regularly donate to our cause. Thank You!

- Adur District Council, who via Mark Quarterly arrange collection of what we have picked. Over the years, Mark and his colleagues have been strong advocates and supporters of our efforts on the beach and in local parks/open spaces. We are smallholders at the quarterly Lancing Village Fayres organised by the District Lancing Parish Council and Keep Lancing Lovely have always pooled ideas and joined resources to boost the Village, particularly with the arrival of what we call "Finn the Fish". Finn is a recycling container made from repurposed metal and paid for by the Parish with a further donation from Recycling in Lancing
- Surfers Against Sewage and Marine Conservation Society have supported, mentored and provided resources right from the start. We undertake joint litter picks with them and collate our finds for a database of the state of the beach with the latter
- The Ouse and Adur River Trust and Strandliners. We recently attended a workshop and litter pick on the River Adur from The Toll Bridge to the Norfolk Bridge organised by them. We were shown how to identify, sort, collate and report our finds as part of an ongoing initiative to rid the river of plastic and other pollution
